Dare I Say : Let the Cuts Begin – - – - Finally!

Sequestration. Is it a government-created mess, as some suggest, or just what the doctor ordered?

Over the past few months, Washington politicians at all levels have scrambled to disavow responsibility for the mandatory $1.2 trillion in cuts to defense and domestic budgets over the next decade.

Perhaps, albeit quite unintentionally, they’ve actually stumbled upon the kind of strong medicine needed to save the patient.

With both republicans and democrats at the helm, the size of our federal bureaucracy has grown substantially and America continues her death spiral towards financial insolvency. Years of partisan squabbling, political grandstanding, and empty promises have accomplished nothing.

Remember the Gang of 6? The trillion dollar coin? A plethora of committees, commissions and studies? The Simpson-Bowles Deficit Reduction Plan? Pay as you go? Spending caps? Balanced budget amendment? All talk and no action.

Although sequestration probably isn’t the smartest way to run a government, it certainly is a first step in the right direction towards gaining control of the nation’s finances. A step that might not otherwise have been taken by our esteemed politicians.

Clearly, sequestration won’t be pretty and it won’t be easy. But that’s what you get when you’re over $16 trillion in debt.

Heck, if I had my way, we’d be upsetting all the apple carts with 15% across the board cuts.

VA to renovate LA building to house homeless vets (Record Searchlight, Dec 24, 2012)

LOS ANGELES – The Department of Veteran Affairs is planning to turn an underused building on its sprawling West Los Angeles site into housing for 65 chronically homeless veterans.

The Los Angeles Times reports Sunday (http://lat.ms/V0l3y) that the $17.6 million project is scheduled to start in late January and be completed in the spring of 2014.

The project calls for renovating a 1945 building used for veteran silkscreening and printmaking programs and refurbishing it into 55 units, including 10 shared apartments and supportive services including job training. One wing will be designated for women.

The VA has come under criticism and a lawsuit over how it uses its West Los Angeles facilities. Critics say the department rented out some facilities to businesses instead of using them to house homeless veterans.

If you feel the Veterans Home should be offered as a place of respite for the homeless, at least until such time as it is utilized for its intended purpose, please consider sharing your thoughts with Peter J. Gravett, Secretary, California Department of Veterans Affairs, at Peter.Gravett@cdva.ca.gov or 1227 O Street, Suite 300, Sacramento, CA 95814.
